KostenloseFotos

It might have taken you a little while, but you finally found a wedding photographer to take photos of your wedding. Everything seems to be good – the photographer is available for your date, they quoted you the price you liked and they are willing to meet you to discuss your wedding in detail and to sign the contract.

But are you sure that the wedding photographer that you're about to hire is the right one?

There are a few things that you can do to check it, so that you don't get disappointed when you look at your wedding photos:

1. When you look at the photos of the weddings that the photographer took (whether it's online or in their portfolio that you can see during the meeting with them), make sure to pay close attention to details. Does the photographer take photos that you like? Do they use good lighting? Creative way of taking group photos? Do they cut off people's heads? Are any of the photos blurry? Unfocused?

Of course any wedding photographer chooses the best pictures to show in their portfolio or on their website, but if there are things about the pictures that you don't like, think twice about hiring that particular photographer, as there is a very good chance that this is what your wedding pictures will be like.

2. Make sure that the wedding photographer you're about to hire has some experience shooting weddings – this is especially important if you're going to have only one photographer. Inexperienced photographers might miss important moments just because they weren't prepared for them.

Personally, I would advise to have at least one experienced wedding photographer to shoot your wedding, just so you don't get disappointed with results (that's exactly what my sister did for her wedding – she hired a professional wedding photographer to shoot her wedding and then had another inexperienced photographer shoot it for free – it worked out great as she had professional pictures of her wedding and some extra shots of different angles- however, the overall quality of the pictures from the inexperienced photographer would be disappointing, had they been her only pictures!)

3. Ask for references and actually call one or two brides and ask them about their experiences with the wedding photographer you're about to hire. Were they pleased with the pictures they received? Were the pictures delivered in a timely manner? Were there any problems with the photographer at all?

Believe me, this is something you really want to do. Otherwise, you might end up like a bride whose story I had read online – she had hired a dishonest photographer. He came to her wedding and took pictures of it and then disappeared. He had never sent her any photos or discs or anything and now she doesn't have any pictures of her wedding! You don't want to risk something like this happening to you!

4. Look up the wedding photographer you're about to hire online. Type in his name, or the business name and look for reviews. You can also ask about the photographer on wedding-planning forums. See what you can find about the wedding photographer before you hire him. Does he have a lot of positive feedback? Is there something about him that doesn't seem quite right?

5. Don't feel obligated to sign the contract just because the wedding photographer came to meet you. If you don't like their pictures or there is something else (like their inexperience, bad reviews for their work, etc.) that makes you feel uncertain about signing the contract, don't! Just thank the photographer for their time and apologize to them saying that they don't offer exactly what you're looking for. It might not be very easy to do, but remember, your wedding pictures are at stake (not to mention that you're paying a lot of money for them).

Jesse James has reportedly made a citizen’s arrest on a photographer he claims has been stalking him. The incident went down this afternoon and according to TMZ the photographer reciprocated the Gomer Pyle gesture by placing Jesse under citizen’s arrest for vandalizing his car!

The confrontation was instigated by a phone call to the Long Beach Police Department by a paparazzo who claimed Jesse James had vandalized his car outside of West Coast Choppers.

Neither party were placed in custody, but police are reportedly investigating the allegations.

Dictionary.com defines stalking as “pursuing (game, a person, etc.) stealthily.” Yes, Jesse James, photographers are stalking you!

Here’s Gomer and the most famous citizen’s arrest of all time:

SAN FRANCISCO — Music photographer Jim Marshall, who spent more than a half-century capturing rock-and-roll legends including the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin at work and in repose, has died. He was 74.

Marshall's death in New York City was confirmed Wednesday by Aaron Zych, a manager at the Morrison Hotel Galleries, which hosted one of the photographer's last exhibits.

Marshall had been scheduled to appear at a reception Wednesday night to promote his new book with celebrity photographer Timothy White. He apparently died in his sleep sometime overnight while alone in his New York hotel room, Zych said.

“Jim's work is legendary,” he said. “As far as music photographers, he is the godfather.”

The cause of death was not immediately known.

According to his professional Web site, Marshall had more than 500 album covers to his credit. The San Francisco resident was best-known for his iconic images from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, where he photographed Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar ablaze, and 1969's Woodstock, where as an official photographer he captured The Who tearing up the stage at sunrise.

Marshall also was the only photographer granted backstage access at what turned out to be the final Beatles concert, at San Francisco's Candlestick Park in 1966. Good timing and his rapport with musicians also helped him catch Johnny Cash memorably “flipping the bird” at a 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.

Other famous subjects included Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones.

“This 'career' has never been just a job — it's been my life,” Marshall remarked on his Web site.

Born in Chicago on Feb. 3, 1936, Marshall moved with his parents at age 2 to San Francisco's Fillmore District, then the heart of the city's jazz scene. He bought the first of his beloved Leica cameras in 1959, and a year later, during what he would describe as a “life-changing meeting” with saxophonist John Coltrane, he found his professional calling.

Before his lens discovered rock-and-roll, Marshall continued to find inspiration in jazz musicians, including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. He also depicted poverty in rural Appalachia and the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi during the early 1960s.

Marshall spent two years living in New York, but returned to San Francisco in time to witness the birth of the 1960s counterculture and to meet young talent like Hendrix, Joplin and Jefferson Airplane during the city's Summer of Love.

His more recent subjects included Ben Harper and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Marshall's work has appeared in numerous books, including four featuring only his own photographs. “Match Point,” his most recent, a collaboration with Timothy White, was published this month.

Jim Marshall, the photographer who captured some of rock & roll’s most unforgettable images including photos of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin, died in his sleep last night in New York. He was 74.

Look back at Jim Marshall’s iconic photos from his book Trust.

The Beatles photographed backstage at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California, on August 29, 1966.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

After starting as a professional photographer in 1959, Marshall was given unparalleled access to rock’s biggest artists, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Who, Miles Davis and Ray Charles. He was the only photographer granted backstage access for the Beatles’ final full concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966 and he also shot the Rolling Stones on their historic 1972 tour.

Grace Slick and Janis Joplin photographed in 1967.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

Marshall developed special bonds with the artists he covered and those relationships helped him capture some of his most vivid and iconic imagery. In one of his last interviews, a chat with Rolling Stone last October, Marshall summed up his rapport with rock stars best when talking about Joplin: “You could just call her at home and be like, ‘We have to take some pictures,’ and she’d say, ‘OK! Come over!’ She trusted me and knew I had her best interests at heart. I only wanted to make her look good.”

Read Rolling Stone executive editor Jason Fine’s tribute to Jim Marshall.

Marshall was born in Chicago in 1936 and was raised in San Francisco. He purchased his first camera in high school and started documenting the artists and musicians in San Francisco’s burgeoning beat scene. After serving in the Air Force, Marshall returned home, where he had a chance encounter with John Coltrane: when Coltrane asked him for a lift, Marshall obliged and the jazz legend returned the favor by letting Marshall shoot nine rolls of film.

The Grateful Dead photographed in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco in the 1960s.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

Soon after, Marshall moved to New York and was hired by Atlantic and Columbia to shoot their artists at work in the studio, including Dylan and Charles. But it was when Marshall returned to the San Francisco in the late Sixties that he produced his most indelible work, taking hundreds of photographs of the Dead, Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and Santana. Marshall recalled one rare instance when he photographed an intensely intimate portrait of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin — supposed rivals at the time — at Slick’s home in 1967. “All that shit about them being the fighting queen bees of rock & roll was bullshit,” Marshall recalled. “They got along really well but they had never been photographed together.”

Marshall continued to be prolific even late into his life. Most recently, he snapped portraits of everyone from John Mayer and Ben Harper to Lenny Kravitz and Velvet Revolver. He has published five books, including 2009’s collection Trust. Marshall, who had no children, was passionate about his work up until the end. “I have no kids,” he said. “My photographs are my children.”

If you are a diehard Batman fanatic and own a Nintendo DS, then man oh man do I ever have the product for you. With Batman Begins having made its way to strong DVD sales after triumphantly conquering the box office and garnering high marks from movie critics, fans of the film can now showcase their extreme fandom for the world to see by picking up the Batman Begins DS Pak from Mad Catz. The kit includes four pieces: clear plastic screen protectors, a DS game and stylus storage case, a DS console slipcase and a set of DS console skinning stickers.

Aside from the screen protectors, which I have and will always hate for any handheld device, the three other accessories are definitely worth the money, at least for serious Batman fans mind you. With the DS console stickers, you get a collection of three skins that easily apply to and remove from the device itself. The three stickers cover the outside of the top flip screen, and both the inside faces around the screens themselves with appropriate cutouts that conform to the button and speaker layouts. In terms of the quality of the skin graphics, they look great, although the design style caters more to the younger audience – I highly doubt that more mature gamers will be applying these skins.

Now to the actual functional products of the Batman Begins DS Pak: first we have the DS Console Case, a black neoprene and rubber Batsuit-stylized slipcase that easily slips over both halves of the DS’s clamshell case with holes cut out for access to all the device’s essential ports and buttons. While the aesthetics of the case are the main attraction (it certainly looks really frickin’ cool), it does have some useful functionality as well.

Though it’s not necessarily meant to be a full on protective case, it does provide soft padding that will protect the DS from minor bumps and falls. More importantly, though, with the case slipped over the DS, two clear plastic panels line the inside of the armor that protect the DS’s screens from scratches without hindering screen clarity or stylus functionality. It would’ve been a great touch to have some sort of belt loop available since the design would have perfectly allowed for it, but that’s just a personal preference.

Lastly comes the game cartridge and stylus storage case. It can hold a maximum of six DS games and two DS styluses, and it does so with unbelievable security. The conforming rubber storage compartments secure the contents incredibly well, so you won’t have to worry about anything jostling loose inside. You’ll also love the case’s form factor. At roughly 4.5 inches long and half an inch deep, it can easily slip into any pocket or backpack space without feeling bulky or adding an extra burden. While the case itself is fantastic, the Batman artwork covering the accessory isn’t the most spectacular in the world.

Overall, Mad Catz’s Batman Begins DS Pak is a solid kit of accessories. Though much of the kit is aesthetically driven, the protective slipcase and game storage box do provide useful functionality. This kit was designed with the Batman enthusiast in mind, and for its target audience it is a highly recommendable product.

Ask Me About Our Cameras

“Excuse me. I was just looking at this camera and I was hoping you might be able to tell me a little more about it.”

“Sure, sir. How can I help you?”

“See, I’ve had my previous camera for a really long time now and I was hoping to upgrade to something a little more portable and modern…”

“Well, you’ve picked up a pretty great little pocket-sized camera there. The Casio Exilim 10MP Digital Camera gives you a lot in such an ultra-thin package with 10.1 Megapixel CCD for superior high-resolution photo imaging, 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, face detection, and lots of white balancing options.”

“That’s, uh… That’s great, I guess. But I was actually wondering about how it captures…”

“Video, sir? Don’t worry. This camera not only captures video in Wide 848×480 or Standard 640×480 resolution, but it also features a YouTube™ Capture Mode and stores all video in an iTunes compatible video format.”

“And, I’m sure that’s lovely. Just lovely. But how do they, uh, come out?”

“Oh, sir. Your old camera must be really old. Everything gets stored on an SD or SDHC memory card nowadays. And with PictBridge-enabled printing, you don’t even need your PC to print the photos.”

“I don’t care about the photos! I’m trying to ask you about the souls.”

“Um. Souls, sir?”

“Souls, yes. You know, you take a picture of someone, the lens captures a piece of their souls, the inner necromantic workings distill the essence of it into liquid form, and then you collect the drippings from the external spout so you can bottle it and use it later to keep yourself young. As near as I can tell, this thing has no spout. I do, however, really like the purple color of the casing.”

“I’m sorry, sir, but I’m not sure this is camera is going to fit your, uh, very specific needs.”

“Well, what about these ‘megapixels’ you were talking about earlier? Is that some kind of digital purgatory that I can trap my enemies in?”

The PS3 came out in November in the USA and Japan. Although it is still very new, millions upon millions have raved on and on about it, complaining, whining, comparing and generally giving it negative feedback. The Xbox 360 on the other hand, was launched over a year ago, yet people believe it is possible to compare them two together. It is like comparing a veteran to a newcomer, a decent, reliable car to a brand new, mysterious car.

First off the topic is the delays about the PS3. Sony promised hundreds of thousands of consoles all over the world at a universal release date, yet failed to deliver. But so what? Who cares! Seriously, you're going to get your PS3 in the end, so it doesn't matter if you get it today, tomorrow or next year. Being patient is a virtue, and is a really important thing to keep this society together. Things happen, people make mistakes and time runs out. It happens to everyone. The people at Sony are Gods or anything, so stop complaining and raving on just because they delivered something late. First look at yourself, are you perfect? No. So why should anyone else be. Anyway it's better to get the PS3 late, when there are more games availabe to play resulting in more choice, diversity and variety.

The second is how powerful each console is. The truth is that they are both very powerful and capable machines. Yet people say the PS3 isn't as good as the Xbox 360 and was just a waste of time and money. But how can you compare something when it brand new and hasn't had time to developed. Comparing the PS3 to the Xbox 360 right now is expecting a baby to do the same things as a teenager. It's not going to happen. The game developers have not had the time or resources to fully experiment and adapt to the PS3's powerful cell processor, the thing that makes it totally different than the Xbox 360.

The PS3 has not had the chance to show it's full potential. In fact, the current games for the PS3 are far from utilizing the unique and powerful features of the PS3, because as I've said before the PS3 game developers have not had the time and resources to play around with things, see what the PS3 is capable of and overall produce a game which harnesses the power of the PS3 console.

Also many of the popular and exclusive game companies have not put their foot into the PS3 yet. Think Final Fantasy, God of War and along those lines that made PS2 one of the best and most outstanding game consoles ever. Those kind of games are still developing and until those games come out and show the world how much the PS3 is capable of, you can really review the PS3 yet, saying it's bad or good.

So until that time comes where both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are able to show their full potential, you can not compare these two powerful gaming consoles. If you do, then you are an idiot who is bias and not being open to the truth. And even after all that you still think the PS3 is a complete waste of time, well lets see you build your own gaming console, trying to market it and persuade companies to design and develop games exclusive to your console. Good luck! You'll be needing it.

What a coincidence; I learned to develop
film with 4 x 5 sheets of that stuff in Flag.
I used it with the camera back on my major
prof's microscope. We didn't have a regular
darkroom, just a small lab with a sink. It
had two doors so you had to be sure to lock
both. He had a small enlarger in there, too.
Ever see Reid?

Indeed. And it probably would benefit me to
go back and reread those gems. Kodak did put

Editor’s Review:

“What a connection between these birds! I really like the two views of the bills and the courtship display captured by the photographer. Clarity in focus is perfect. The lighting is a little harsh, but it is very difficult to work with the black and white contrast of the plumage and the brightly colored feet and bills. Well done!”— Steve Freligh

Several matches will be played at Soccer City to test the surface before the World Cup opening ceremony, including from the domestic Nedbank Cup. A game is also set to be organized between the South Africa national team and an international side.

Soccer City is inspired by the shape of the calabash, a gourd used throughout Africa to store food and drink, a symbol of hospitality and togetherness. It is an intimate sporting venue, with spectators as close as four meters (yards) from the pitch.

Fiberglass cladding on the exterior of the stadium in earthy shades of red, orange and brown refer to Johannesburg's history as South Africa's city of gold. Tunnels leading to the pitch continue the mining theme, with interior scaffolding and workmen's' lights hanging from untreated cement walls.

Thami Mabuza, a member of the Soccer City construction team, told The Associated Press that “I'm proud because it's a World Cup stadium, and I can tell people that I contributed to it.”

PopWatch’s love affair with Johnny Weir continued last night as he made an appearance on HLN’s Joy Behar Show. He reiterated his position that the two sports commentators who suggested he undergo a gender test during the Olympics should’ve thought before they spoke: Parents may repress their children if they think they’ll just be ridiculed for being themselves or (gasp!) turning out like him. “And I think me is pretty fabulous,” Weir said. Behar agreed, adding that she loved his “Snooki hair.” “It’s Marie Antoinette, not so Snooki,” Weir corrected her. Then he admitted he doesn’t actually know that much about Snooki, and I had a vision of us sharing a (faux) fur blanket and watching a Real Housewives of Atlanta marathon (his preferred reality show) while he occasionally got up to dust my apartment. But wait, there’s more…

Behar asked him to comment on the remarks that he was “too gay” for figure skating. His response: (sideways glance) “It’s figure skating.” Ha! He made the point that no man has ever been accused of being “too butch” for the sport, and often, the women are “more butch” than the men. “I mean, feathers, rhinestones, you know, velvet, glitter, it’s not exactly the image, especially for Americans, of a macho sport. But what I do, I challenge any football player, any hockey player, any soccer player, to do what I do for one day and not cry,” he said. Forget, Shaq vs. — that is a show I would watch! Behar then showed him a clip of Isaac Mizrahi on her show joking that Johnny was “a little too gay.” She said he was in good company if Elton John thinks Jesus is gay. “I suppose so… I think Jesus was a woman,” he quipped. Behar decided she wasn’t going to touch that one, and instead moved on to Weir’s fur controversy. He said he wasn’t going to lie and say he just wears faux fur now. “Just because someone feels one way, doesn’t mean I’m gonna change how I feel.”

Highlights not in the video above: Weir said he felt he deserved to medal in Vancouver after delivering a free skate that was the best he’s ever been: “But figure skating is a judged sport, a political sport. There was already one American assured a medal spot, and maybe they were saving room so that two Americans couldn’t be on the medal stand.” (Note: When superfan Kelly Ripa suggested he was robbed on Regis and Kelly Tuesday, he blamed the judges’ ages.) Also, he admitted he didn’t get any action in the Olympic Village. “There are usually rules in the Olympic Village: No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, and no fornication,” he said. “So I was very shocked that they were giving us condoms.”

This will be the grand unveiling of their new Nike-made away uniforms. In what is actually a very cool move by Nike
the shirts are made from recycled plastic bottles. I am still deciding
whether I like this new jersey. I appreciate the nod to the 1950 US
team that knocked off England in the World Cup. By the way, England
is the first opponent the US will face in South Africa – NOTE: in
light of the John Terry/Wayne Bridge fiasco it wouldn’t shock me if
between now and then the London tabloids disclose that Wayne Rooney
was caught in a threesome with Margaret Thatcher and Elton John…nothing
about English football would surprise me at this point. So, what don’t
I like about the jersey? The sash sort of reminds me of a school crossing
guard or elementary school hall monitor. It’s wayyyyyy better than
the faux-dungaree abomination (dungaree? What am I 90?) with vomited
stars all over it they wore in 1994. It’s been discussed ad nauseum, but it’s
incredibly annoying that the powers that be with both US Soccer and
Nike insist on introducing new US uniforms every other week. US Soccer
needs an iconic uniform, like say the classic orange rocked by the Dutch.
Uniforms aside, what are the other story lines headed into this game?

Who Will Not Be There

Charlie Davies, Clint Dempsey, and Oguchi Onyewu are all battling back
from significant injuries and will not play in this game. If healthy
all three would start for the US. Davies is in the midst of possibly
completing one of the most bionic recoveries ever. He suffered a gruesome
laundry list of injuries following a fatal car crash in Maryland back
in October. He’s attempting to come back from a broken right femur
and tibia, a broken left elbow, facial fractures and a lacerated bladder.
It’s only been a little over four months since the accident and Davies
is already back training with his French club team (Sochaux) in the
hopes of being fit enough to make the World Cup roster. Enrico may not
let me write for the site again if I fail to mention that Davies, like
Enrico, is a BC alum. Dempsey is aiming to be back playing for club
side Fulham in a few weeks, which would put him on track to be ready
for South Africa. Meanwhile, Onyewu, who is also recovering from
a knee injury, is training with the USMNT in Amsterdam and barring any
setbacks should be ready by June as well. Also, notably absent from
the US roster is Freddy Adu, who has finally been getting some run with
Aris in the Greek Super League. Benny Feilhaber, my soccer mancrush
(not to be confused with Claude Giroux, my hockey mancrush) also is
out with an injury.

Who Will Be There

The
good news is that a majority of the presumptive starting eleven will
be there. This includes (from back to front) Tim Howard, Carlos
Bocanegra, Jay DeMerit, Jonathan Spector, Michael Bradley, Landon Donovan,
Stuart Holden, and Jozy Altidore. Donovan, the all-time leading goal
scorer in USMNT history, has been silencing critics who were skeptical
of his ability to excel outside of CONCACAF and Major League Soccer
following his loan to English Premier League side Everton.

To
get an idea of just how far US soccer has come it is worth noting that
every single player I’ve mentioned thus far plays professionally in
Europe (although Donovan plays for the L.A. Galaxy his loan to Everton
has been an incredible success with rumors swirling that he may remain
in England, so I am counting him as a Europe-based player). Why is this
worth noting? Well, much like European hockey players come to the US
to play in the NHL, which is the best (and highest paying) hockey league
in the world, more and more US soccer players are signing with European
clubs. The level of competition and scrutiny is much higher in European
leagues. In order for the US to compete with the elite soccer countries
US players must continue to play and succeed in the top European leagues.

What to Watch For

Despite
the amazing progress he’s made it’s far from a done deal that Davies
will be healthy come June 12th when the US faces England.
There is a good chance that Bob Bradley is going to need to find someone
to partner with Jozy Altidore up top. Ideally that person would be Clint
Dempsey, who for some reason Bradley often deploys in the midfield.
The only other forwards on the US roster for this game are Robbie Findley
and Eddie Johnson (Adu’s teammate with Aris). Johnson is a complete
enigma. Upon making his USMNT debut he scored seven goals in his first
six games, which is great. He’s only scored five in his last 33 games,
which is not so great. He’s a striker who is seemingly afraid to shoot.
Think Allen Iverson, only the complete opposite. Findley has been on
the field (I hesitate to use the word “played” because he’s been
invisible when given the chance) over the last few friendly’s. Given
the lack of scoring on the roster it’s mildly surprising that Bradley
did not include Brian Ching or Connor Casey (although the argument could
be made that their skill sets are too similar to Altidore’s). Going
forward we need to pray that either Davies continues his miraculous
comeback, or that Bradley plugs Dempsey in alongside Altidore.

If
Bradley plans on playing Dempsey up top then there is also a potential
opening in the midfield. I’d imagine Ricardo Clark, who is not on
the roster and is getting zero playing time in Germany, would step into
the middle to partner with Michael Bradley in a central midfield role.
With Clark out on Wednesday I wouldn’t be surprised if Maurice Edu
gets a long look. DaMarcus Beasley, who has been about as healthy as
Ray Emery, makes his return to the US team. Finally, I’ll be hoping
that US defender Jonathan Bornstein eats too many space cakes in an
Amsterdam coffee shop and misses the team bus to the ArenA. He’s a
World Cup own goal away from me preemptively calling the Chester Police
and turning myself in prior to his club Chivas USA taking on the Union
at PPL Park. Pray he does not see the field.

Prediction

Dutchman
Dirk Kuyt, who looks like Sloth from The Goonies, is the most tireless
soccer player you’ll ever see. His work-rate is through the roof.
His teammate Arjen Robben, who appears to be approaching middle age,
but is somehow only 26 years old is a fantastically skilled player who
should give the US back four fits. Also, assuming he is healthy it is
an absolute joy watching Wesley Sneijder play (he’s sort of like a
point guard who orchestrates the offense and pulls all of the strings).
The Dutch play an incredibly attractive brand of soccer. Combine all
this with the fact the US is notoriously awful on European soil. So
what is my prediction? Best case: the US somehow wins. Worst case: they
emerge from the game injury-free. Reality: 3-1 Netherlands.

Many thanks to Rev for dropping his footie knowledge on us.

In the last few years, I’ve spoken with Frank Dell’apa, Ray Hudson, Grant Wahl, Ives Galarcep, Jack Bell, Bruce McGuire, Jeff Carlisle, Buzz Carrick, Mitch Peacock, Robert Abramowitz, Beau Dure, and others, but it’s been a while since I sat down with one of the flashlight bearers in this little wilderness to get their story.

Now that the soccer journalism transfer window appears to be closing in on the World Cup and a new MLS Season (there is going to be one, right?), I thought it meaningful to get back to basics.

With the USMNT playing in Amsterdam tomorrow, and what with my fascination by the life (I imagine) of an American living in Europe, writing a blog for an American audience, there was no one better to kick this series back into motion than Greg Seltzer, who brings the boys back home through his various outlets as a full-time soccer writer.

Yes, he does earn a living off internet soccer writing.

TIAS: When I mentioned to a few people that I was going to talk to you, everyone was curious about how you make it work over there. And what with the Amsterdam game, figured it was good timing.

Greg Seltzer: Yeah, I think a lot of people are confused that this is actually how I make my living.

Exactly. We’ll get to that, but let’s start at the beginning. Where were you born and raised?

St. Louis, a good soccer town. I went to Ladue Horton Watkins high school and was on the school newspaper all four years. Most of it was not sports-related, but my first experience of this kind was on the high school newspaper. A couple of times I went to the Blues’ locker room after a game or to a practice, and I did a couple of features on a couple of the hockey players back then. I went off to the University of Missouri, in their pre-journalism program, and then I ran out of money and had to go to work.

I started doing other things and various types of writing and non-writing things—working in restaurants and trying to open restaurants and things like that. And then I was in Birmingham, AL, I guess it was 2000 or 2001, and one day realized that Soccer365 was headquartered there. I thought, “Why don’t we kick this writing back up.” It’s always been really natural for me to relate things and tell stories and play with words, so I just walked in there and said, “What do you need me to do?” I wasn’t looking for a lot of money; I just wanted to get back into it.

How old were you?

I was 31. I had been away from it for awhile, so I did a few samples for them and picked up some weekend editor duties, picked up their vacation days, took over the website. I did a few women’s and men’s national team games during that time and just gradually it became full-time, and then that was my job a couple of years later.

So from those beginnings, how do we get to where you are now?

It was certainly not a luxurious living I was making when I first moved to Europe, which would have been August of 2003. When World Cup 2002 was going on, one night after a U.S. game I decided I was going to be working World Cup 2006. I started right then planning and saving. It took about a year-and-a-half before I went. There were times when it was a real struggle, and I needed help from friends. Financially it was hard to make a living, especially when the dollar started going out from under me. There were tough times, but just kind of keep plugging away, and gradually things have improved. Things are going well; I have something coming up I can’t really devulge quite yet (now he can).

So you just picked up and said, “I’m moving to Europe?”

That was the whole idea. I started in Germany and Switzerland to get the scene, be involved in the whole Champions League, European games, and just get myself ready for the cup. Just getting the vibe, get in the flow of it, make contacts, meet people, go to games I’d never been to before, broaden my experience of observing and then reporting or relating from that.

Like lately, right now, I’ve been thinking I want to go take the coaches course, because it will improve my writing, the analysis of my writing. Just broaden my brain, to open it up to more things, get more influences in there. Get involved. It’s a bigger scene, here, and I had done everything that was there, so I had to be at World Cup, go early, and be immersed in the whole thing. It was all about the soccer. An adventure, you know?

Brave soul.

A lot of people thought I was insane. I just got it in my head that that was what I wanted. What I wanted to experience. What I wanted to do. Where I wanted to take this. I just focused on it and got it done. It’s certainly not a microwave oven formula for success. It was what I wanted to do. Enjoying and having a connection to what I am doing is more important than going for every last dollar.

How did soccer grab you to this extreme?

In St. Louis, it’s not hard to run into the game. It’s everywhere. I played rec-league, but mostly played other sports. When I ran outside, soccer wasn’t what I was running outside to do. I do remember my dad loving all things German, and so he would watch Soccer Made In Germany on PBS, and that was where I really started. I have memories still. I was 5 years old. Had to be like 1974.

Part of the show was the Bundesliga, and then they would veer off someplace else, and occasionally to the Dutch national team, which is my first love. I saw a clip of them, and it was instantly clear to me at the time that these guys were doing something nobody else was doing out there. Living in America before the internet, it wasn’t something I could see or experience, so it was rather sporadic. When they won the European cup in 1988, I think I found out a few weeks later. I had no clue.

ESPN started showing Eredivisie games every weekend. Ajax was a machine with it’s Berkamps and Davids, and you could just go one—UEFA Cup, Champions League. And they were on ESPN almost every Sunday. That team was when the passion for it really came in full blown. Then it wasn’t just some distant magically romantic thing, it was there every weekend, live, not three weeks later.

Anyone who has been to No Short Corners can obviously tell I have a love for Dutch football. That was my first love. I didn’t even realize that the U.S. had a national team until I think Ricky Davis was in the team, because I was a big Ricky Davis fan. That had to be mid-to-late Eighties before I realized they even had one. And of course just a few years later the World Cup came around and before you know it, you can’t remember a time when you didn’t follow it everyday.

It’s strange—If anyone asks I have one club: Ajax. But I kind of have two national teams that I live and die with. I get a lot of questions about that. The Dutch were my first love, so you can’t just throw them out.

Is that why you ended up in Amsterdam?

The first time I came here was for 90 Minutes magazine to talk to John O’Brien. It was a really big thrill for me personally, to go to an Ajax match and so forth and so on. I was only here for 3 or 4 days, and I really enjoyed the city. Later on, I went back for a longer time.

I’m still amazed a magazine would send you to Amsterdam.

No, that was all me. I went up there, scheduled it all out while keeping my usual stuff going. They didn’t pay for me to go there.

That sounds more like it.

Yep, so I just fell it love with Amsterdam. It suits me. This is where I feel happiest and most at home. I like that I don’t have to drive a car. I like so many things that we could just sit here and talk about that for hours. But yeah, I had been hopping around a bit, and it was time to stop living out of suitcases so much. I was in Hamburg and Zurich, which I liked as well, but this just feels very natural. It’s in me.

Was it natural for you to focus specifically on Americans, when did that frame come to be?

There wasn’t really a lot of attention paid to guys over here. It makes sense. It had not really evolved to that, and the media didn’t have people traveling all over the place. But I did that John O’Brien piece and a few others—I did Cory Gibbs while he was at St. Pauli, Conor Casey, and others. That was when I was really part on that trail the first time. The magazine—I am over here, and that is what they wanted from me, because, what else would they want? I’m the only one over here.

Talk about cornering a market.

They would just be like, “Who can you go talk to?” I didn’t have quite as many contacts right when I arrived, but I was able to hop on my bicycle to the St. Pauli training ground or grab a train up here. That was I guess the first time I realized that someone needs to be checking in on these guys. I went through Yanks Abroad, went through American Soccer Daily, and yeah, now, everyone and their mother is calling up, after guys all the way down to lower leagues. So I definitely got in on that in the right moment.

You say every and their mother is calling you up, but now it seems everyone and their mother is starting a blog about Americans playing abroad.

They do seem to be springing up.

How do you fit into all of that madness? A lot of people don’t know this is your full-time job. So break that down for me in terms of No Short Corners.

The blog started when I—how do I say this delicately—when I negotiated a new salary or whatever with Soccer365. There were a few blogs out there detailing these stories, but I wanted No Short Corners to be a little different. I wanted to be able to get little posts up about news or if something crazy happened, some goal clip fast, but it says “gonzo” on the tag line up top of the blog, and as much as we have time for, we try to get that stuff in there. Sean and I.

One of the posts I like the best is called Foiled like an old school Ding Dong, and it basically runs through the story of my disastrous trip to Amsterdam ArenA to go interview some players and leaving without a single quote on tape from anyone about anything. I had a busted toe at the time—it was just a big misery story. So we like to put those things in. Sean—he travels around a lot—so when he’s in Columbia or Poland or something, he likes to throw in some of their soccer flavor in there.

I love Sean’s posts; I wish he had more time to do them. But we try to have the stuff people expect that catches them up but also throw in a little odd flavor.

Who those who may not know, who is Sean?

Sean O’Conor. At this point he works outside the soccer writing industry but he still does some things for SoccerPhile and posts on No Short Corners when he has the time. I’m an American, and my way and some of the various things I say are clearly American, and Sean is British and brings a good contrast. He brings a little class to the place. He’s a good partner in this. Gives a good balance. Wish I was rich and could pay him to do it full-time.

So is Soccer365 a full-time job for you?

Yes. As of this moment all of my salary money comes from Soccer365. That will change shortly, but at this moment and for the last long while. I don’t use No Short Corners in any way to make money. I don’t put any effort into selling ads. So Soccer365 pays the bills, but it’s not been steady the way the economy’s been, and the way that this is such a small niche in America. But gradually we try and try, and things have gotten better for me, so on that note, like I said, I’m not living large, but I’m living, and it’s good enough for me.

What’s your daily schedule look like?

This is why everyone hates me. I don’t wake up to an alarm clock. Maybe 3, 4, 5 times a year. So I wake up around 10am, but it depends. That’s one thing about being over here. If there is an MLS match or something, I will have to get myself up to watch that, so maybe I’ll sleep till noon the next day.

I start off getting caught up with news, whatever happened in America while I slept. I check a few things that I’m keeping an eye on. Just getting back into the swing of it. I’ll usually get into making phone calls in the afternoon once people are back from lunch and in the office. I keep track of my regular columns, like Grapevine, which is simply whispers from all over the world. So I will knock those things out and spend most of the day working with the blog or putting together a feature or column. And I have my lunch ritual of watching the Daily Show.

Which leads perfectly into my next question. Is all of your American media consumption online? It has to be, right?

It is, but in the same way Amsterdam’s demographics are very diverse, so are its cable TV offerings. So I’m not just getting Dutch stuff and the Dutch highlight show. I have two English channels, Turkey, Belgium, seven, eight, nine channels from all over the place. Most people don’t have nine league highlight shows on their TV. That helps a lot. Then add in Eurosport, and they show a lot of international stuff. I will occasionally have someone put a computer cam on a TV in the U.S., so I can watch the game on their TV on my computer in Amsterdam. You have to improvise sometimes to find these games. I haven’t actually been at a U.S. men’s national team game since August 2007. So this is going to be a really good thing.

It’s hard being far away sometimes, but you do what you can do and make it work best you can. Because I am not often if ever writing game reports, it’s not essential that I watched the game right there and then. I can wait until there is a replay or there is a video.

Is it fair to say your reading audience is almost entirely American?

At No Short Corners–yeah. At Soccer365, last time I checked, they have a fairly size-able audience in South Africa, some Canadian and Mexican, and there’s a little bit of English people coming over now and again. I was curious about that because we’re facing them in the World Cup, and I think they are sort of spying us a little more than we realize, looking into our bubble.

I think from the geography to your audience, to what you cover, you might be the best example or the most extreme example inside this little bubble of someone who really has used the internet to turn themselves into a soccer writer.

I think that is a good estimation. Before Soccer365, I was invited and was allowed to have the odd guest column in a few newspapers in the States, but I don’t believe any of them were about soccer. So my job is fully a product of the internet, the rise of the news coverage, the rise of the thirst for news coverage—all of it.

And what were you doing in Birmingham exactly when you read about 365 headquarters?

I was unsuccessfully trying to put together a St. Louis Bread Company that would have gone at the Summit, for all the Birmingham people—an outdoor ritzy titzy shopping center atop a little mountain. And there were actually putting one at the Summit just before I left, so somebody agreed with me that it was a terrific idea. Business things, all things business, and yeah, it’s just not my arena; it’s not my comfort zone, it’s not my knowledge base. So yeah unsuccessfully trying to open a restaurant is what I had been doing when I thought, “Hmm, maybe I should go back to doing something that comes a little easier to me.” Yeah, that’s not my scene.

February 2nd, 2010

• Slide-Out Qwerty toetsenbord
• Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro
• Xperia Panels
• 8.1 megapixel camera
• Divx/Xvid video support
• Wifi en GPS
• 3,5 mm audioaansluiting

Sony Ericsson Xperia Panels

Connectivity is perfect

We’ve seen Panny’s standard-def camcorders, but here are Panasonic’s three new HD cams. The HDC-HS60, HDC-TM55 and HDC-SD60 are all compact LCD touchscreen camcorders with 35.7mm wide-angle lenses and a healthy 25x optical zoom. And that’s just the basics.

They’re also the first Panasonic camcorders capable of recognising up to six faces in view. You can pick a face to keep focus on in a shot, and it has a wind noise canceller and an Eco Mode that turns off the power after five minutes of dormancy. The zoom can also extend to 35x for those occasions when you need to spy on the house one further down the block.

Pricing and availability will be announced “30 days prior to shipping date”, which we don’t know yet. But know that you’ll have at least a month to mull it over.

Panasonic Unveils New Full HD Camcorders, Ideal for Casual Shooters Looking for Portability and HD Quality

Equipped with Wide-Angle Lenses and Extended Zooms, Panasonic’s New HD Camcorders, including the HDC-TM55, Provide Increased Shooting Ranges

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Panasonic today introduces new full High Definition (HD) camcorders to its 2010 line, which includes three compact and stylish models, the HDC-HS60, HDC-TM55, HDC-SD60 – perfect for users wanting portability, without sacrificing HD quality. All new Panasonic HD camcorders feature a 35.7mm wide-angle lens, ideal for capturing a variety of different shooting situations, such as self-portraits, indoor group shots and outdoor landscapes.

Panasonic’s three lightweight and stylish introductory HD camcorder models, the HDC-HS60, HDC-TM55 and HDC-SD60 may be ultra-compact in size, but these models all feature a powerful 25x optical zoom. And with Panasonic’s new Intelligent Zoom feature, the new HD camcorders can extend to a 35x zoom. Intelligent Zoom corrects image degradation in ordinary digital zooming to deliver stunningly clear HD quality, even with the zoom fully extended.

“Consumer demand for High Definition camcorders continues to grow, so Panasonic’s 2010 line of camcorders introduces some models intended for users new to HD camcorders – so they are small, compact and easy-to-use,” said Chuck Kirkman, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronic Company. “The Panasonic HS60, TM55 and SD60 are intuitive camcorders that deliver full High Definition video that users will be proud to show their friends and family, either from a computer or a High Definition television.”

All three new models expand Panasonic’s iA (Intelligent Auto) with the addition of Face Recognition, a feature that lets the user register up to six faces and the camcorder will then automatically prioritize focus and exposure on the registered face(*1). In addition, the focus continues to track the subject as the person moves anywhere within the LCD frame, making it easy to focus on a specified person in a group. Other iA features include: AF/AE Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Contrast Control, Face Detection and POWER O.I.S. POWER O.I.S., new to the 2010 line of HD camcorder is approximately five times the corrective power of previous versions and helps suppress blurring from low-frequency vibration. Also, all models feature Active mode in POWER O.I.S. which minimizes the blurring while the user is moving and walking.

All Panasonic camcorders record content to SDHC/SD Memory Cards and the new SDXC Memory Cards, including Panasonic’s newly announced 64 GB(*2) SDXC Memory Card – to enable high capacity content storage and fast data transfer speeds. The hybrid HS60 camcorder can also record data onto its large 120 GB(*2) Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and can copy recorded video from a card to the HDD, or vice versa, with a simple one-touch operation. The Twin Memory version, the HDC-TM55, records to its 8 GB(*2) built-in memory and the SD60, recording to memory card only, is highly resistant to impacts since it has no drive mechanism.

Other features included on the 2010 Panasonic HD Camcorder line:

* Eco Mode(*3): Automatically turns off the power when the camcorder is not operated for five minutes, reducing wasteful energy use and saving battery power.
* Wind Noise Canceller: New feature that automatically detects and suppresses wind noise to help ensure natural sounds with lifelike ambience.
* Touch-Screen Operation: Touch-screen icons displayed on the LCD lets users operate a variety of functions intuitively without taking their eyes off of the subject they are recording.
* Auto Power LCD: Automatically adjusts the brightness of the LCD screen according to the shooting environment. In dark places, the screen brightness is reduced to 1/3 the normal level. In bright outdoor places, the screen brightness is double the normal level.
* VIERA Link(TM): Connect a Panasonic HD Camcorder to a Panasonic VIERA® HDTV via an HDMI mini cable, and operate the camcorder using the TV’s remote control and follow on-screen prompts.

Pricing and availability for the Panasonic HDC-HS60, HDC-TM55, HDC-SD60 High Definition camcorders will be announced 30 days prior to shipping date. All models will be available in black. For more information on these models, please visit www.panasonic.com/CES2010.

*1 Depending on background and facial expression, camcorder may not recognise a registered person. For family members with similar facial features, camera may not correctly identify the intended subject.

*2 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

*3 Set to ON when shipped from the factory.
